About SameGame

SameGame is a single-player group-removal puzzle. Each choice changes the board through gravity and leftward column compression, so a large group now can compete with a larger group later.

This version uses original code and hand-drawn numbered tiles. Numbers supplement color, and group previews show the exact score before you commit.

How to play SameGame

  1. 01Choose a group of at least two tiles of the same numbered color connected above, below, left or right. Diagonals do not connect. The first tap previews the whole group; Remove group or a second tap on that group commits the move.
  2. 02Tiles above the removed group fall down. Empty columns slide left without reordering their surviving tiles. There are no replacement tiles or time limit.
  3. 03A group of n tiles earns (n−1)² points: a pair earns 1, four tiles earn 9, and ten earn 81. Clearing every tile adds a 1000-point bonus.
  4. 04The run finishes when the board is empty or no removable groups remain. Remaining single tiles are a normal score finish. Undo works after either finish; Restart retries the same board. New board or a size change creates another random run.

SameGame controls

Select and preview
Click or tap a tile. A matching group is outlined together. Singletons can be inspected but cannot be removed.
Remove and rethink
Press Remove group or tap the selected group again. Undo takes back one removal, even after the run finishes. Restart restores this initial board.
Keyboard and mobile
Tab to a tile, use arrow keys to move between occupied tiles, then Enter/Space to select. Tab to Remove group to confirm. Medium and Large can scroll inside the board frame on small screens.

SameGame: levels and progress

There are no numbered levels. Small is 6×6 with three colors; Medium 10×8 with four; Large 14×10 with five. Each New board creates another random run.

More cells give more planning space; extra colors can create isolated tiles. Random runs do not form a strictly increasing difficulty sequence and are not promised fully clearable.

SameGame tips and strategies

Join before clearing

Two groups of four score 18 in total. If gravity lets you connect them into eight, that group scores 49. Check whether a small blocker can be removed first.

Read the landing cells

Before removing tiles near the floor, follow where each column will settle. Same-color tiles in neighboring columns may land at different heights.

Plan the last color

Do not rush the final pair of a color if it can connect to a lone tile later. Emptying a column also shifts every column to its right.

  • Remove a small blocking group to join two large groups after gravity.
  • Keep the final tiles of a color connected: an isolated singleton may become stranded.
  • The same board can score differently depending on your order. Use Undo to compare.

SameGame FAQ

Can every random board be cleared?

No. Each opening has a legal move, but complete clearing is not guaranteed. The challenge is to maximize your score and reduce leftovers.

Does my game save?

The current board and legal move history save in this browser when local storage is available. New board replaces the current saved run.

Is this a match-three game?

No. A group of two is enough, tiles are not swapped, and no new tiles enter. You choose the order of removals.

What happens when no groups remain?

The score is finalized with the remaining tiles visible. This is a normal finish; you can Undo, Restart or choose New board.

Are scores comparable across board sizes?

Not directly. The number of cells and colors differs, and random boards differ too. Compare replay routes on the same board.
