About Mahjong Solitaire

Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player tile-matching puzzle. Remove pairs from a layered board while keeping an eye on which tiles are covered or blocked at the sides.

This version uses 144 tiles and 12 numbered deals, with an option to start a random deal. A board clears after all 72 pairs are removed; a deal can also become stuck if no matching free pair remains.

How to play Mahjong Solitaire

  1. 01A tile can be selected only when no remaining tile overlaps it from above and at least one of its left or right sides is open.
  2. 02Match two identical numbered or honor tiles. Any flower can pair with another flower, and any season can pair with another season; flowers and seasons do not match each other.
  3. 03The board has 144 tiles: 34 standard kinds appear four times each, plus four flowers and four seasons. Remove all 72 pairs to clear a deal.
  4. 04Choose one of 12 numbered deals or a random deal. Restart restores the current deal, Undo restores a removed pair, and New Deal starts another board. After clearing a deal, a fresh random deal starts automatically in three seconds; choose Continue now or Stay here.
  5. 05Every deal has a complete matching route, but a different sequence of choices can leave no pair available. There is no gameplay timer, shuffle, or saved progress.

Choose one of the 12 numbered deals or Random Deal. Hint highlights one legal pair without removing it. Undo restores the last removed pair, up to 72 moves; Restart returns to the same deal and New Deal starts another.

Mahjong Solitaire: levels and progress

The board has 144 tiles arranged in three overlapping layers. The set includes 12 numbered deals and a random-deal option.

The first page load opens deal 1. Restart keeps the current deal; New Deal chooses another. Clearing a deal starts a fresh random deal in three seconds unless you choose Stay here; Continue now skips the wait. There is no gameplay timer or saved progress between visits.

Mahjong Solitaire tips and strategies

Check the spaces each pair opens

A removal can uncover tiles above or open one side of a row. Consider these changes before choosing between available pairs.

Match the tile families

Numbered and honor tiles need identical faces. Flowers match other flowers, and seasons match other seasons; those family pairs can help when they expose new choices.

Use a hint for a current move

A hint points to one legal pair in the present board. It does not promise that an arbitrary sequence of later choices can still clear the deal.

  • Look for a pair that uncovers tiles below or opens a blocked side; the next row may offer new choices.
  • When several pairs are available, compare what each removal exposes before choosing.
  • Flower tiles match within their family, as do season tiles. Save these flexible family matches for a moment when they open useful choices.
  • Hint marks a pair that is legal now. It helps with the current board position, but does not guarantee that every later choice will work.

Mahjong Solitaire FAQ

When is a tile free to match?

It must have no remaining tile covering it from above, and at least one of its left or right sides must be clear.

How do flower and season tiles match?

Any two flowers can match, and any two seasons can match. A flower cannot match a season.

Can I get stuck?

Yes. Each deal has a route that clears all 72 pairs, but another choice order can leave no legal pair. Undo a move or start a new deal if that happens.

What does Hint do?

It highlights one matching pair that is available in the current position. It does not remove tiles or guarantee a solution from every later position.

Is my progress saved?

There is no gameplay timer or saved progress. After a clear, another random deal starts in three seconds unless you choose Stay here; Continue now skips the wait. Restart returns to the same deal, while New Deal starts a different one.

What makes a tile free?

No remaining tile may overlap it from above, and at least one side—left or right—must be open.

Do flower tiles need identical faces?

No. Any flower can pair with another flower. Any season can pair with another season, but flowers and seasons cannot pair together.

Does every deal have a way to clear the board?

Each deal is created with at least one complete matching route. Different choices can still leave no available pair, so use Undo or restart if the board gets stuck.

Does the game keep my progress or track time?

There is no gameplay timer or saved progress. After clearing the board, a random deal starts in three seconds unless you choose Stay here; Continue now skips the wait. Restart restores the current deal, and New Deal begins another one immediately.
