About Kakuro

Play Kakuro online through 99 original, uniquely solvable cross sums. Each short run has its own sum and no-repeat rule; intersecting runs give each white cell two constraints. These puzzles and hand-drawn artwork were independently created for this site.

The board starts with some fixed digits to make the sums approachable. Small grids introduce short sums before larger, more connected puzzles. You can use notes and correct entries freely; completion is checked against the actual run rules.

How to play Kakuro

  1. 01A number in the upper right triangle is the sum of the white cells to its right; a number in the lower left is the sum below it. Black cells divide runs.
  2. 02Use digits 1–9, without repeating a digit within one run. The same digit may appear in separate runs. Every white cell belongs to one across and one down run.
  3. 03Small ink digits are starting clues and cannot be edited. Select an empty cell, then enter a digit. Notes pencil in possibilities; they are not final answers.
  4. 04Every one of the 99 independently generated puzzles has one verified solution. Fill all white cells correctly to finish. Conflicting entries remain editable; there is no lives limit.
  5. 05Undo restores the previous edit, Restart restores this puzzle and Hint fills one correct cell. Progress and completion are saved on this browser when storage is available.

Kakuro tips and strategies

Start with tight sums

Two cells totaling 3 have only the digits 1 and 2; a crossing clue decides their order. Larger sums such as 17 similarly force 8 and 9.

Use intersections

A run totaling 10 in four cells must use 1, 2, 3, 4. Cross it with another run and remove digits that cannot belong to both. Notes keep alternatives visible without committing them.

Read the clue direction

The upper-right triangle points right; the lower-left points down. A grey separator starts a new run, so repeated digits on opposite sides do not conflict.

  • Two distinct digits totaling 3 must be 1 and 2; totaling 17 must be 8 and 9.
  • Intersect the possibilities from both clues before placing a digit.
  • A red run cannot satisfy its sum and no-repeat rule with the current entries. Erase or undo an entry; this is not a failed round.
