About Crazy Eights
Crazy Eights is a traditional shedding card game. This original browser edition pairs a human with a computer and uses a standard deck with no branded action-card artwork.
The decision is which matching card to shed and when to spend a wild eight. Two draw rules and different computer choices let you compare strategies on the same deal.
How to play Crazy Eights
- 01Two players receive five cards each from a standard 52-card deck. The starter is never an eight; you can choose who goes first.
- 02Play one card matching the active suit or the rank of a non-eight top card. Any eight is wild: choose its next suit before confirming the play. An eight on top can only be followed by that suit or another eight.
- 03Draw until playable allows repeated draws. Draw one limits each turn to one draw; play a legal card afterward, or pass only if no card fits. You may draw instead of playing a match.
- 04The discard pile is not recycled. With no stock and no matching card, pass. Two consecutive blocked passes end in a draw; otherwise the first empty hand wins.
- 05There are no stacking, skip or draw-penalty cards and no spoken last-card penalty. A last-card message appears automatically. The computer only uses its hand and the public table.
- 06Restart repeats the deal. New deal shuffles. Unfinished browser-local saves restore paused. This version is one human against a computer, without online rooms.
Crazy Eights controls
- Cards
- Click or tap a legal card, or focus it with Tab and press Enter or Space. Selecting an eight opens four suit buttons; canceling changes nothing.
- Draw and pass
- Draw voluntarily while the selected rule permits. Pass is available only without a playable card after the draw limit, or when the stock is empty.
- Pause and save
- Pause stops both the opponent and active time. Hidden pages pause automatically. Resume an unfinished saved deal explicitly; blocked storage does not prevent play.
Crazy Eights: levels and progress
This is a complete card hand, not a level campaign. Five cards each, a 41-card stock and one non-eight starter account for all 52 cards.
A normal hand ends when someone has no cards. Exhausted-stock hands can end in a blocked draw. There is no recycling, multi-hand score target or last-card penalty.
Crazy Eights tips and strategies
Control the suit
Choose an eight’s suit by the cards you can follow up with. A rank match is unavailable immediately after an eight unless the next card matches its nominated suit.
Read the remaining hands
Only the computer card count is visible. Its two strategies use its own hand and public table, with no access to your cards or future draws.
- Keep track of the suit you can play next, rather than discarding a match without a plan.
- Save an eight for a poor hand, or use it to switch to your most plentiful suit.
- Watch the computer hand count: holding a wild card too long may let the opponent finish first.
Crazy Eights FAQ
How many cards are dealt?
Five each in this two-player version. Other Crazy Eights variants deal seven; the selected rules are shown here.
Does an eight match any card?
Yes. Choose a suit, and the next player must match that suit or play another eight.
Can I play with friends?
This version is single-player against a computer. It has no network rooms.
Why can I draw with a matching card?
Voluntary drawing is allowed, but Draw one still caps each turn at a single draw. A legal card must be played before passing.
What happens when the stock runs out?
The discard is not recycled. A player without a legal card passes; two consecutive blocked passes draw the hand.
